Stand with our Immigrant Communities

Last week, Houston City Council passed a common-sense ordinance protecting our immigrant neighbors from unlawful detentions and bringing real transparency to how HPD interacts with federal immigration enforcement. We supported it then, and we support it now.

But Governor Abbott is threatening to pull $110 million in public safety funding unless the city repeals it by April 20 — not because it’s illegal, but because it doesn’t fit his MAGA political agenda. Mayor Whitmire has called a special session this Friday to consider doing exactly that, and we can’t let it happen without a fight.

Mayor Whitmire did the right thing when he voted for this ordinance. If he repeals it, he is complicit in the Governor’s political game — and worse, he and Abbott will have officially put a price tag on our constitutional rights. Houston is not a tool for state government. We are a collective government made up of many diverse communities.

Houston deserves a city willing to explore every option to keep this ordinance alive.

URGENT ACTION — Houston City Council special session this Friday on the Prop A ordinance protecting immigrant communities from unnecessary ICE involvement. Abbott is threatening $110M in funding if we don’t repeal. We say: Stand firm. Do NOT repeal.
