Why We Started—and Why We Need Your Help

2–3 minutes

In October 2025, we incorporated Texas Rainbow Fund. Not because it was the perfect time, but because it was necessary.

Across Texas, rainbow crosswalks—symbols of inclusion, memorials to lives lost, and tools for safer streets—were being targeted, vandalized, and erased. The crosswalk at Westheimer & Taft wasn’t just about visibility for a marginalized group. It was a memorial to an LGBTQ+ Houstonian who lost his life. It was a public safety intervention in a community where LGBTQ+ people are five times more likely to experience violent crime than non-LGBTQ+ people.

Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law: LGBT people in the U.S. are five times more likely to experience violent victimization than non-LGBT people.

We’re a group of passionate Houstonians—LGBTQ+ members and allies—who believe that communities that embrace everyone thrive. We know that safer streets aren’t just about infrastructure. They’re about who gets to move freely, who gets to be seen, and who gets to come home safely at night.

What We’re Building in 2026

This year, we’re scaling up. We’re organizing. We’re showing up in neighborhoods across Houston to make our public spaces safer, more inclusive, and more connected.

Here’s what we’re working on:

🌈 Microgrants for Local Action

Small, fast grants ($250–$500) that put resources directly into the hands of LGBTQ+ Texans and their allies working on safer streets, better bike infrastructure, crosswalk art, and community-led improvements. We want to fund the neighbors who are ready to make change at the intersection, trail, or block level.

🚴 Safe Streets Advocacy

We’re pushing for protected bike lanes, better pedestrian infrastructure, and transportation systems that work for everyone—not just those who can afford a car. Because getting around safely shouldn’t depend on your ZIP code, your income, or your identity.

🏳️‍🌈 Building Visibility & Power

From Pride crosswalks to policy campaigns, we’re making sure LGBTQ+ Houstonians are seen, heard, and represented in the conversations about how our city grows and who it serves.

How You Can Help

Individual Contributions

We’re a grassroots 501(c)(4) organization, which means we rely on people like you to make this work happen. Here’s what your support will fund:

  • Organizational protections so our volunteers and board members can lead bold campaigns without personal risk
  • More microgrants to fund community-led safety projects across Houston
  • Advocacy tools and campaigns that push for real policy change on safe streets and LGBTQ+ rights

Every dollar goes directly to building safer streets and stronger LGBTQ+ communities. Whether it’s $10 or $1,000, your support matters.

Corporate Partnerships

We’re actively seeking corporate sponsors and event partners who share our values. If your organization wants to support LGBTQ+ visibility and safer public spaces in Houston, we’d love to collaborate.

Email us at info@texasrainbowfund.com to learn more about hosting a fundraising event with us or becoming a corporate supporter.

Let’s make 2026 the year Houston gets safer, bolder, and more connected—for everyone.
